Analysing Music Videos p2

You should analyse at least 3 music videos on your blog. They should be from a similar genre of music to the one you intend on working in.
You should embed the video of each track into your blog along with a title of the song and artist to make it clear what you are analysing. For each video you need to make sure you don’t just describe what is happening in each video, but instead are making analytical comments using key media terminology.
Analyse ONE in depth looking at:
• Camera movement, shots, angles
• Editing transitions, special effects
• Mise-En-Scene (colour, costume, props, location, facial expression etc)
Analyse ONE using Andrew Goodwin’s theory. Analyse how the theory could be applied to the video. (Use essay framework provided)

Analyse ONE using Mulvey’s male gaze theory. Can Laura Mulvey’s theory be applied to the video, if so, where?

The storyboards should be nearing completion now, so the next stage in your planning is the production schedule.

Tasks for this week.

Look at the section titled analysing music videos in your "Unit guide" (pg4), using the guide to Andrew Goodwin complete and upload an anlysis of a music video from the same genre as your choosen song. (If you want me to check through this before you post it, e-mail it to me)
By this point you should also have uploaded the lyrics to your song to the blog.
In addition ensure you have put the links to your surveys on the blog and at least began to analyse your results.  This along with a description of your target audience should also be uploaded to your blog.

s you should by now know, this blog is designed to offer support as you progress through your Advanced Portfolio.

If you are struggling for inspiration for things to research or ideas for your own construction work, start by having a look at other blogs. The links at the bottom provide access to blogs from previous years, and the link to Long Road Media (below) allows you to have a look at some of the work produced by other schools and colleges. Remember, however, that these are not necessarily perfect examples; some may offer inspiration whilst others may show what not to do!

In terms of research, consider...

  • Professional videos
  • Amateur videos (YouTube etc)
  • Different musical genres
  • Directors
  • Intertextuality - links between videos and associated albums, posters, websites etc
  • Your song choice
  • Lyrics
  • Possible settings
  • Actors
